Kero Kero Bonito - Rest Stop. More songs by Kero Kero Bonito.
Time 'n' Place is the second studio album by British indie pop band Kero Kero Bonito, released on 1 October 2018 through Polyvinyl Record Co. It is their first album released under Polyvinyl. Produced by the band's t Gus Lobban, it includes the previously released singles "Only Acting" (which was also featured on their TOTEP EP), "Time Today", and "Make Believe".
Kero Kero Bonito broke out in 2016 with Bonito Generation, an album of synthpop so effervescent it felt like the sonic embodiment of watermelon Pop Rocks. Time ‘n’ Place is much more turbulent than its predecessor, even if it’s more conceptually grounded. Only Acting, for instance, leads with a drum pad beat and synths that writhe like Silly String. The most exciting moments on Time ‘n’ Place come when the production takes these sorts of left turns, when the recordings fizzle or crack with distortion as though an alternate reality were coming into focus. KKB disrupt songs with surprising video game melodies and distortion bombs wired with manipulated vocals.

Between Bonito Generation and Time 'n' Place, Kero Kero Bonito experienced losses ranging from the deaths of family members and pets to the destruction of childhood homes. To cope, they gave themselves room to grow and heal, and their second album delivers a mix of cathartic rock and imaginative synth pop. Changes like the ones KKB underwent can be jarring, and Time 'n' Place reflects that by bookending its songs with two of the band's biggest departures.
The sophomore full-length from Kero Kero Bonito, Time ‘n’ Place is an album ineffably shaped by the subconscious. Lead singer and chief lyricist Sarah Bonito (who was raised in the suburbs on the Japanese island Hokkaido) found herself rattled in recent years by recurring images in her dreams: a water park from when she was little, a hallway in her primary school. After those dreams started, she also received an unexpected photo from her brother: a picture of a plot of bare land that once held her childhood home, the house now demolished. An album concerned with the sanctity of physical space in an increasingly virtual world, Time ‘n’ Place also speaks to the thrill of going outside (on Outside ), the tranquility of the town dump (on Dump ), and the surreal stillness of a deserted rest stop (on Rest Stop, a track that finishes the album in a beautifully glitched-out.

Kero Kero Bonito’s Sarah Midori Perry received a picture in the mail from her brother – an empty lot where their childhood home once stood. The image struck her with new perspective. Suddenly the past felt unattainable. I really felt like the time was moving, Perry says in a phone call from the road. I actually felt like 'Oh wow, I can't go back to that. In possibly the most forward-thinking record in the British trio’s discography, Time ‘n’ Place whizzes by with exciting flourishes of static and sugary sweet melody. Yet within the life-affirming performance, the band grapples with growing up and life changing course without your control. KEXP caught up with the band in late 2018 as the band toured in support of the record, discussing how they bonded over dramatic life changed and events as well as the high-concept theories that are embodied in the record.
