Skiffle is a music genre with jazz, blues and American folk influences, usually using a combination of manufactured and homemade or improvised instruments. Originating as a term in the United States in the first half of the 20th century, it became extremely popular again in the UK in the 1950s, where it was associated with artists such as Lonnie Donegan, The Vipers Skiffle Group, Ken Colyer and Chas McDevitt.
Johnny St. Cyr, a banjo player always cited by younger banjo players as an inspiration and who played on many of the most important early jazz recordings, began his music career playing the guitar and recorded largely on a hybrid guitar-banjo. Narvin Kimball, the original owner of the banjo Le Blanc uses, played second banjo on an album titled Banjos on Bourbon in 1963 with fellow Preservation Hall band member Emanuel Sayles. The banjo was never a central instrument to jazz,. The banjo, in the end, had merely hitched a ride with the new music of ragtime and jazz into modernism. p. 110) While this quote from Karen Linn’s important book on the history of the banjo in America supports the claim that the so called traditional, classic, or Dixieland jazz bands of recent history inaccurately place importance on the banjo’s role.
When I was first starting out to play tenor banjo I picked up a solo album that Narvin Kimball put out called Narvin Kimball & Friends. I learned all of the tunes on that album and it taught me many chord voicings and ways to move the chords from one to another. Elmer Snowden was one of the top jazz banjoists of the early jazz age. He was a renowned band leader with musicians such as Count Basie, Roy Eldridge, Chick Webb, Jimmie Lunceford, and many more working in his band. Harry Reser was one of the greatest banjoists of the 1920's and played with a tremendous technique that banjoists are still trying to copy. He recorded a number of solo banjo albums that proved the tenor banjo was not just for accompaniment. In 1925 he became the leader of the Clicquot Club Eskimo Orchestra which had a weekly half hour show on the NBC radio network.

did produce a generation of influential working-class musicians. The Beatles grew out of skiffle group the Quarrymen―John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison’s best attempt to make Lonnie Donegan fan music. When young Pete Townshend saw Ken Colyer play, he thought, is going to the change the world. Born of old-school British takes on jazz, it added a rebellious racket, with a strong rhythm section built on bass, drums, and often washboard; throw thunderous guitars into the mix in the place of trombones and clarinets, and you have a homegrown recasting of an alien art form, one populated by unsung heroes and forgotten moments. Skiffle and Lonnie Donegan were references to ghosts I had but vague impressions of. Now I have the context and the foundation for understanding what led up to the birth of Rock and Roll and The Beatles.
