From: 'David Byrne' (1994). Gone were songs about buildings and food. Also, the exotic elements found on both 1989's Rei Momo and 1992's Uh-Oh. Instead, songs like "Back in the Back" – part of an eponymous effort that arrived in the wake of his sister-in-law Tina Chow's AIDS-related death – reveal a human side of Byrne that we'd rarely seen in the past: "The sun shines on the evil; the sun shines on the good," he sings here. It doesn't favor righteousness, although you wish it would. The music was just as tough, uncompromising.

Attempting to inject some adventure into his multicultural, worldbeat-inflected avant-pop, David Byrne dabbled with trip-hop and drum'n'bass on Feelings. These tracks, including a collaboration with Morcheeba, are essentially window dressing, a way to distract attention from Byrne's lack of new ideas. The songs that work best on Feelings, like "Miss America," are reminiscent of the percolating, Latin-tinged Rei Momo; when Byrne tries to sound contemporary, he simply seems out of touch. Still, Feelings is stronger and more adventurous than David Byrne, even if it never.

The New York City innovators talk to Jayson Greene about their collaborative album Love This Giant, playing Beauty and the Beast on the record's uncanny cover (pictured), and how Walt Whitman may have predicted Kim Kardashian. The iconoclast talks about the nature of performance, his new concert film, and how an R. Kelly DVD threw him for a loop.
