Lenz has worked as a session musician and drummer since he was 13 years old, but unleashes the full, soulful, warm breeze of his songwriting on the world with The Hot Stuff. Soul Train meets American Bandstand on this collection that crosses pop, soul, and R&B and ends up like a funky Air ("Take the Wheel"), Martin Denny in a time of hip-hop ("Electric Light Battleship"), and a decaffeinated Fatboy Slim ("Queen Bee of the Indiots"). From the get up and shake it title track, with its blast of horns and jamming organ, to the laid-back Dr. Dre-esque analog whine.
Frank George Lenz (born 1867, probably died May 1894) was an American bicyclist and adventurer who disappeared somewhere near Erzurum, Turkey, then in the Ottoman Empire, in May 1894, during an attempt to circle the globe by bicycle. Frank Lenz was born in 1867 in Philadelphia to Adam Reinhart and Anna Maria Reinhart, born Schritz, immigrants from Malsch, Germany. His father died while Frank was still a child, and Anna Maria moved to Pittsburgh.
Frank Lenz started taking drum lessons when he was eight years old. "Playing drums is all I ever wanted to do," Lenz has said, and by the age of 13, he began his career working as a session musician. After playing with several indie bands such as The Lassie Foundation, Starflyer 59, Pedro The Lion and Charity Empressa, Lenz developed his original work as a solo musician, mixing the pop of Burt Bacharach with power rock like Steely Dan, jazz fusion, and Stevie Wonder-style R&B.
