Composer Gerald Fried, who scored five Kubrick films, takes up the baton here, leading the COPP through suites from his five scores, Spartacus, Dr. Strangelove, and Lolita, as well as classical pieces associated with his films.

Kubrick with showgirl Rosemary Williams in 1949. for various technical and political reasons, forcing him to move production to England.
Stanley Kubrick’s audacious use of music was one of the aspects that distinguished his films. He handled music with sensitivity, invention and respect and it resulted in the creation of some of the most indelible scenes in cinema history . He played it to death, and it would inspire him later in his own use of dramatic music. From the scintillating recording by Fritz Reiner with the Chicago SO, we include the movement, ‘Battle On the Ice’.
The mystery of Stanley Kubrick’s career is that one man balanced critical appeal with commercial success for nearly forty years, and did it all with thirteen features spaced up to ten years apart. Certainly no other serious film-maker secured a lifetime deal with Warner Brothers for the financing of his final five films (though Warner did briefly court Jane Campion following the success of The Piano), and no other director rivalled Kubrick in reputation for perfectionism . Now Stanley Kubrick was incapable of playing music, but was nonetheless cogniscent of the power of music in film.
