Shirley Collins and her older sister, Dolly, grew up in the Hastings area of East Sussex in a family which kept alive a great love of traditional song. Songs learnt from their grandfather and from their mother's sister, Grace Winborn, were to be important in the sisters' repertoire throughout their career. 1969 brought another collaboration, The Holly Bears the Crown, this time with The Young Tradition - featuring, addition to Dolly Collins, Peter Bellamy, Heather Wood, and Royston Wood. This album was not released until 1995. It featured a suite of songs centred on the changes in rural England brought about by the First World War. Dolly Collins created arrangements featuring David Munrow and various other players from his Early Music Consort.

Holly Bears the Crown. The Holly Bears the Crown. This album was the fourth and final Young Tradition album, recorded in 1969 but not released until 1995, after the deaths of three of the major players involved (Royston Wood and Peter Bellamy of the Young Tradition, and Dolly Collins, elder sister to Shirley; Shirley and Dolly collaborated here). And it's a shame we had to wait so long for it, but kudos to Fledg'ling for having gotten it out to us - it's one of the label's earliest releases.

The Young Tradition and Shirley & Dolly Collins recorded one album together entitled The Holly Bears The Crown under the name The Young Tradition with Shirley & Dolly Collins. This album was recorded in London in 1969. A few weeks later musical and financial differences caused the break-up of The Young Tradition. The trio "The Young Tradition" (Peter Bellamy, Royston Wood and Heather Wood) sang a capella folk songs in a style similar to the Copper Family. Royston and Heather Wood (not related) preferred early music. Peter Bellamy later carved a solo career.
