Микс – Shinichi Atobe ‎- Ship-ScopeYouTube.

Atobe's album was so enchanting when it appeared last year because it seemed to exist out of time. On the one hand, it was excavated electronic music from a bygone era, but on the other, it didn't sound like much that came before or after. Ship-Scope has the same slate-grey aura, though its fizzing dub techno synths place it more clearly in the lineage of Chain Reaction. The record's first half is given over to shorter, more experimental tracks: the aqueuous (and beatless) title track features chords that surface like froth on ocean waves.

Direct downloads for TMF users. Phase fwd to 2015 and DDS rightly put it back into circulation with this necessary reissue arriving in the wake of Atobe’s much loved archival salvage, ‘Butterfly Effect’, which caused quite a ripple in late 2014.

Ship-Scope ‎(12", Ltd, RE, RM, RP, Blu). Great music, really poor mixing/mastering compare to the album Butterfly Effect. DDS actually did a good job with the remastering, especially if the original source is vinyl. They obviously did some EQing, removing unwanted frequencies/noise, the kind of thing that you start doing during the mixing, on separate elements of a track.

Original vs repress :I first bought the repress, wasn't happy with sound quality. Then bought the original release from 2001 to compare. I was really disappointed with the sound again. The original unfortunately sounds exactly like the youtube videos, back ground noise, too much tape hiss, muddy sound. I was hopping that it was a bad Youtube upload before i bought the original but the vinyl (VG+) actually sounded the same. Great music, really poor mixing/mastering compare to the album Butterfly Effect.DDS actually did a good job with the remastering, especially if the original source is vinyl. They obviously did some EQing, removing unwanted frequencies/noise, the kind of thing that you start doing during the mixing, on separate elements of a track. The fact that it's done on an already mastered track is that you end up by loosing interesting tones, you have less flexibility basically. Therefore the repress doesn't sound great but it's definitely not worse than the original, it's a bit clearer, less muddy. I ended up by selling the original, and kept the repress which isn't that bad at the end...(Here's a picture that i uploaded with both version together.)

These types of comments are really helpful to vinyl lovers - thanks for sharing your experiences with chasing the best version of this record.
does the remastered version sound better than the original?
Anybody know whats playing at the end of red line?
The end of red line . . . .. .
Longitude Temporary
Why would it have been remastered from vinyl as opposed to just pressed again from the master?
Original tape got lost or damaged...
So this was ripped off a vinyl copy, with present audible artefacts, including some messed up panning here and there, and then pressed again on vinyl. Figure out yourself how much such a remaster is worth.FYI - it is, of course, the same rip that's sold as digi on boomkat and junodownload. You can literally hear the needle being put on vinyl at the beginning of The Red Line.
I love Mercedes
you're confused, get out, get some fresh air.
whats the story here? did the repress come and go already?! If thats the case...Honestly i really can't fathom the thinking behind limiting quantities of long out of stock represses - especially those with such popular demand. Surely its about getting the music out to new audiences and those who genuinely appreciate the music but cant afford to be victims of discogs profiteering...
im sure there will be countless represses - its boomkat after all lol
Please don't forget that vinyl pressing plants are right now under such demand that it almost impossible to schedule a release in a timely fashion. I don't have any information about a repress, but a lot of folks here are talking about it here, so it may be real, just don't expect to see copies arriving at online stores right away. Some stores are still carrying some:
Don't stress. I'm certain they will press and press and...
very very good pressing - surprised to hear it was mastered from vinyl?redeye taking pre orders if you missed out at boomkat fyi
Rolling Flipper
repress due soon, also copies will be in Europe and the US in the next few days, as distributors get it out.
This won't have reached other record stores yet, just be on the lookout at your local shop.EDIT 5th November: This will be repressed. Don't buy off the sellers speculating on this record.
How do you know it will be repressed? Do you have a source?
Btw im going out and buying that reminder part 3 on thursday, amazing stuff as usual, do you happen know when that split LP is coming out on sued?
was about to ask, this is a must have for me though i didn't want to pay for shipping if I could get it locally 2 weeks later
argh! I missed it again
already sold out?
ltd repress on demdike stare ! ! ! ! the gods are with us
yeah, on presale for 18 bucks. I say fuck this.
Repress absolutely needed!
Found this in a bargain bin on the floor of a record shop for £2 and in perfect condition. It's a task to get down there with the state of my knees - but well worth the effort in this case. Reminds me of why I like to look through cardboard boxes of records.
Brick my own
Why is this record so extremely demanded all out of a sudden? Wants increased by 150(!) within the past 30 days. This used to be a 15 Eur record. What happened?
Impala Frozen
Adolf Hipster went beserk to it on Boiler Room. ;)
$681...that price is absolutely absurd.. highest its sold for is $65.. hope they repress it and blow that out of the water
beautiful, moving record.
Who was Shinichi Atobe? Did he ever release anything else, under a different name perhaps? Surprising these four tracks were the only thing we ever heard from him.... One commenter on YT hypothesizes that it may have been an alias for René Löwe (Vainqueur), and I think this is plausible, but no one seems to know for sure...
If he really exists (I have some doubts about it but I'm leaning to say that he DOES exist) it's still a mystery how a unknown guy from Japan has been able to get in contact with Chain Reaction guys and get a release. His music is as amazing as big is his mystery.
Thanks for the replies! I was very excited to hear about a new/archival release from Shinichi Atobe, but was VERY disappointed when I heard it. It sounds to me like mediocre half-realized demos and throw-away outtakes to me, and has none of the depth or quality of this classic Chain Reaction 12". If this new collection was the best material he was able to produce over the past decade+, I guess I understand why he never released anything else... Oh well, perhaps there is more to come!
Demdike Stare unearthed an address from the Basic Channel / Hardwax offices, they manage to track him down. So he IS Japanese, and he lives in Japan. They found out he had a lot of old and new stuff, so they released an album from the findings.Hope he comes back and releases more because his only EP on CR is fantastic. And i also wonder why he remained so of the grid. Maybe he is one of those shy elusive individuals that puts an very high criticism to himself like Derrick May on what to release and has all the time in the world to do so. We can only hope for some more since long gone producer coming back again seems to be a thing these days.
this has just recently been released from the archives, still got stock available
What is so remarkable about this release is how it takes those sounds familiar to most other Chain Reaction releases and puts them in a different context, a cleaner production realm containing beat structures more familiar to microhouse than experimental dub. This release is perhaps one of the best entry points for those looking to find out more about this great label as it has a fairly accessible sound; although it doesn't attain the greatness of some of the earlier releases, it captures the spirit.
When I wrote this eight years, this also had a far more accessible price point compared to most of the other Chain Reaction releases...
i agree
This is without a doubt, one of the most shit-hot Chain Reaction releases I've heard... Wonderful, melancholic and deeply moving, the CR-staple analogue fuzz replaced with a slightly crisper fuzz. Excellent, and still available from Hardwax for those who are interested.
