Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov was fortunate enough to have been born into a wealthy family that awarded him the education required to succeed. He started taking piano lessons and made his first composition when he was just 10 years old. Besides, he developed a sincere interest in watching opera and concert performances. He also had perfect pitch, a factor that helped him greatly when he finally decided to pursue music fulltime despite his lack of conservatory training like other world-class composers. 2. He did not think he could be a musician. Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov had an inherent desire to play.

In particular, after the death of Modest Mussorgsky in 1881, Rimsky-Korsakov took on the task of revising several of Mussorgsky's pieces for publication and performance. For example, Rimsky-Korsakov's arrangement of Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain is the version generally performed today. However, critical opinion of Mussorgsky has changed over time so that his style, once considered unpolished, is now valued for its originality.

Rimsky-Korsakov managed to combine his busy job and creative work. His other great opera, written with diligence and love, was May Night. The composer was greatly inspired by the literary works of the Russian writer Gogol (who is thought to be the founder of Russian realism), especially by the author’s mythological characters and rich depictions of village life, with its old customs and fantastic and supernatural elements. From 1881 to 1888 Rimsky-Korsakov’s progress as a composer came to standstill; he was paralyzed creatively. But he eventually recovered and continued to create masterpieces, although his later works were written from a very distinctive psychological point of view. Rimsky-Korsakov tried to discover the deep inner world of the human psyche. Two good examples of these pieces of music are Mozart and Salieri (1897) and The Tsar’s Fiancée (1898).
