Hospice is the third studio album by American indie rock band The Antlers, and their first concept album. It was initially self-distributed by the band in March 2009, and was eventually remastered and re-released once they signed to Frenchkiss Records in August of the same year
Hospice is bereft of irony and cynicism, as befits a rather ghastly narrative that feels, perhaps deceptively, autobiographical. But what’s really great is how these modulations of weight are integrated into an album-long sweep, with crescendos nested inside decrescendos, coiling surges inside lengthy unwinding passages.

Arriving in 2009, Hospice was the third album of graceful, often heartbreaking folk-flavored indie rock that Brooklyn songwriter Peter Silberman wielded under the Antlers moniker. The crushing, beautifully arranged concept album is delivered from the perspective of two central characters: an abusive bone cancer patient on her hospital death bed and a committed nurse who becomes attached and falls deeply in love, despite impending tragedy.
Nevertheless, Hospice is like a first novel, in that – regardless of how true to his life it is – there is evidently a lot of Silberman in Hospice. It's even a novelistic album (unsurprisingly, given that his mother is a writer), similar in some ways to Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar. Where that was about a troubled young girl from Massachusetts struggling to fit into New York life, Hospice was written after Silberman moved left Skidmore College, near Saratoga Springs in upstate New York, to move to the city
