Kokū Nishimura (西村 虚空 Nishimura Kokū, 1915 – June 2002) was a master shakuhachi player, teacher, and craftsman. Like his teacher, Kyochiku Tani, Nishimura became a komusō (a mendicant shakuhachi player). Nishimura wandered Japan as a mendicant for ten years. Kyochiku Tani was trained in the Fuke sect. After the sect's abolition in 1871, he continued the tradition of shakuhachi playing as a spiritual practice.

This unique music was recorded by the master Koku Nishimura in 1964. It was recorded in his home on the island of Kyushu in Japan. As much noise as possible was removed from the old tapes by using the latest technological methods. Our aim has been to preserve the original sound of Koku Nishimura’s kyotaku flute.

This unique music was recorded by the master Koku Nishimura in 1964. It was recorded in his home on the island of Kyushu in Japan. He used an old-fashioned tape recorder with just one microphone, so it has been a challenge to bring the recording up to modern standards. As much noise as possible was removed from the old tapes by using the latest technological methods. Our aim has been to preserve the original sound of Koku Nishimura’s kyotaku flute.”
