This article presents the discography of the jazz saxophonist and band leader John Coltrane (September 23, 1926 – July 17, 1967). Coltrane participated in his first recording sessions while enlisted in the Navy from August 6, 1945, to August 11, 1946. He performed eight numbers in a pickup band that included trumpeter Dexter Culbertson. These were private recordings not made for official release.

By 1964, Coltrane’s quartet was at the peak of their career and considered the best jazz group of the time. Coltrane had gone through a lot at this point, battling with drugs and other personal issues while trying to maintain his playing. By then, he had become very spiritual, turning to his faith in his times of need. His connection to this becomes evident in his music, especially in A Love Supreme

Of Coltrane’s 1950s output, it’s ‘Blue Train’ that has best stood the test of time - today, its songs, just like those of 1960’s ‘Giant Steps’ (his first complete collection of originals, and a ground-breaker for Coltrane’s compositional creativity), have become cornerstones of many a jazz musician’s development.

This album, recorded in September 1957, marked John Coltrane’s comeback after his heroin use led to his ejection from Miles Davis ’ band earlier in the year. After going cold turkey and successfully beating his addiction, Coltrane was a man reborn whose music became more sharply focused, especially after he began working with Thelonious Monk Recorded in 1959 while Coltrane was still playing in Miles Davis’ band, Giant Steps marked a significant stride forward for the saxophonist, who, with the title track in particular – based on a cyclical series of descending chord changes – captured perhaps the ultimate expression of bebop. Having taken bebop to its limits, it was no wonder that Trane changed musical direction after this album, opting to explore modal jazz, which offered more freedom for improvisation. As well as the classic title song, Giant Steps included the haunting ballad ‘Naima’, named after his first wife.
