The voice of David Gates was inescapable in the early 70's with songs like "Diary","Everything I Own", "If", Baby, I'm A Want You" . I so remember seeing him perform the song on the Mike Douglas show, Mike held up the album sleeve and introduced him and his new release "Took The Last Train".

David Ashworth Gates (born December 11, 1940) is an American singer-songwriter, musician and producer, frontman and co-lead singer (with Jimmy Griffin) of the group Bread, which reached the tops of the musical charts in Europe and North America on several occasions in the 1970s . It yielded another hit single, "Took the Last Train", which reached No. 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 but the album itself made it only to No. 165 on the Billboard 200. In 1978, Gates and Bread guest starred on an episode of The Hardy Boys Mysteries. Botts and Knechtel from Bread, along with Warren Ham, brother Bill Ham and bassist David Miner, continued to record and tour with Gates.
This song is by David Gates and appears on the album Goodbye Girl (1978). Took the last train to St. TropezHad in mind to dance the night awayExperimented with a cognac highWhen in France you give everything a try. Soon the crowd dwindled down to twoNot a soul around but me and youYou just smiled in French and took my handSpoke the words I tried my best to understand. You're tellin' meViens chez moiCe soir va jamais terminerOn va rester toujours ensemble.
the Last Train& is a single released by David Gates, lead singer of the group Bread, in 1978 following the premiere of the hit movie The Goodbye Girl, and as a follow-up to the title track hit song from the album of the same name. The song contains French lyrics, which are then followed by the translation in English. The last train goes to St-Tropez, a town on the French Riviera. Took the Last Train& reached number 30 in the . on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Cash Box Top 100. It peaked at number 7 for three weeks on the Adult Contemporary chart
Since former Bread lead singer David Gates scored a minor hit with the theme song to the movie The Goodbye Girl, he decided to use that very same title for his next album. Goodbye Girl contains a mixture of new and old material, and Gates managed to net a Top 30 hit with the smoothness of "Took The Last Train", his last Top 40 single. Gates abandoned the sugary love song formula which he made famous with Bread on soft rock songs like "Make It With You", "If", and "Everything I Own" to give "Took The Last Train" a cool, slick jazzy sound. Took The Last Train" stayed inside the Top 40 for five weeks peaking at number 30, while the album itself only made it to number 165 on the charts. Gates went on to make a few more albums, but they made little commercial impact.
