Figure 8 is the fifth studio album by American singer-songwriter Elliott Smith, and the final album he completed before his death. It was recorded from 1998 to 2000 at numerous studios and released on April 18, 2000 through DreamWorks Records. Preceded by the singles "Happiness" and "Son of Sam", Figure 8 was Smith's second release on a major label.

Figure 8. Elliott Smith. Released April 18, 2000. 1. Son of Sam Lyrics. The album cover features a photograph by Autumn de Wilde, depicting a wall at 4334 W. Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles. Since Elliott’s death in 2003 it has become a memorial to him. Figure 8 Q&A. Produced by Elliott Smith, Tom Rothrock & Rob Schnapf.

When we last left Elliott Smith, his Dreamworks debut, XO, was being called the best album of 1998 by all your dad's periodicals. His songwriting had clearly advanced since the release of his heralded indie classic, Either/Or, and songs like "Bottle Up and Explode", "Tomorrow Tomorrow", and "Pitseleh" featured far more intelligent lyrics and melodies than the songs off its predecessor. The new album, of course, will be a major determining factor in the course of his career. It could break new ground in the genre, taking a hammer to conventional pop rules and re-writing music history (don't count on it), or it could establish him as the new king of adult contemporary radio, virtually erasing his name from punk's history books. Of course, it comes out somewhere between the two. Figure 8, ultimately, isn't as good a record as XO or Either/Or, though the man's not out of the picture yet.

Elliott Smith Figure 8 UK CD album. The story of Elliott Smith is well known now: Shy and reclusive indie rocker soars to a Hollywood soundstage and major-label contract. His fans gasped in collective horror when he took a bow at the 1998 Oscars, his hand clasped by Celine Dion. He seemed far too fragile to survive among the sharks and vultures on the corner of Hollywood and Vine. I love Elliot Smith but I think Figure 8 isn't as good as "XO" or his final album: "From a basement on a hill" moody, emotional and deep lyrical these other albums are better in my opinion than this dream works produced theatrical hyped up production. When listening to a guy like elliot it's better not to be overly produced and have to deal with all the big noise coming from all these orchestral induced hollywoodish big band sounds that drown out something that should be kept simple and plane.

Judging only by his earlier, bare-bones indie-label albums, it seemed highly unlikely that Elliott Smith would turn into the ambitious arranger and studio craftsman of his lushly textured Dreamworks debut, XO. A big part of that shift, of course, was the fact that Smith had major-label finances and equipment to work with for the first time; this allowed him to fuse his melancholy, slightly punky folk with the rich sonics of pop artists like the Beatles and Beach Boys.

With Roman Candle, Elliott Smith, and Either/Or, Elliott Smith showed us despair and regret, but with Figure 8 he is revealing the light at the end of the tunnel. Don’t get me wrong, there are elements of his previous work scattered throughout the record, but this does not sacrifice what is a very hopeful feeling that the album portrays, with every burst of vivacious energy and every quiver of Smith’s idiosyncratic vocal delivery. Figure 8 is uplifting in such a way that you just seem to melt in its buoyant aura, encountering tracks that are just as infectious as the last.
