in memories of Pablo Casals’, finishing the programme with ‘Song of the Birds’. His recitals of the complete cello works by Bach and Beethoven have always sold out months in advance. Hirai, born into a celebrated musical family, studied piano, violin and composition with his grandfather, eminent composer Kozaburo Hirai, who studied under G. Mahler’s disciple, Klaus Pringsheim, and cello with his father, Takeichiro Hirai, noted cellist whom Pablo Casals designated as his successor. He completed his Master’s degree in conducting at the Peabody Conservatory of the John’s Hopkins University under Frederik Prausnitz, followed by further studies under Otakar Trhlik at the Janacek Academy of Music (Czech Republic) and his mentor Sir Coli n Davis in London. com

Hirai demonstrated anew his masterful skills and exuberant spirit at his birthday anniversary concert on Aug. 28 at the packed Tokyo Bunka Kaikan in Ueno Park, Tokyo. The cellist's selection of pieces was illustrative of his polished but classical style, as well as a life filled with deep respect for Casals, who is also known as Pablo Casals. Accompanied on the piano by his second son Motoki Hirai, a pianist-composer based in London, Hirai senior began the night with Vivaldi's Cello Sonata No. 2, a luminous piece with balanced beauty

Zoltan Kodály's Cello Sonata: 3 of the toughest solo sonata movements ever written for the cello have stood the test of time as emotive masterpieces. Kodály exploits every sonic aspect of the instrument, including tuning the two lower strings down by step, to increase the harmonic and melodic range of the cello. The ferocity of the piece is unmatched by any other work in the standard oeuvre. This is the piece which grabs you by the balls on the first note and never lets go. It is not only one of the best ‘cello pieces of all time, but one of the best pieces of music ever. Every other piece mentioned here is boring by comparison. k views · View 4 Upvoters.
