Mozart: Symphonies Nos. 38 "Prague, 39, 40 & 41 "Jupiter Audio CD. Various. Nikolaus Harnoncourt's Mozart is very interesting and unusual, certainly not the sort of thing you'd chose as your first version, but a worthwhile supplement if you're looking for a characterful alternative viewpoint. Fortunately, Teldec has put Harnoncourt's performances of the last four symphonies together on a specially priced set (two CDs for the price of one). This set is the original, full price issue of only three symphonies, and you should opt for the lower priced reissue if these performances interest you. - -David Hurwitz.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart completed his Symphony No. 551, on 10 August 1788. The longest and last symphony that he composed, it is regarded by many critics as among the greatest symphonies in classical music. The work is nicknamed the Jupiter Symphony. This name stems not from Mozart but rather was likely coined by the impresario Johann Peter Salomon. The symphony is scored for flute, two oboes, two bassoons, two horns in C, two trumpets in C, timpani in C and G, and strings.
