Bécs is the sixth studio album by Austrian electronic music producer and guitarist Fennesz, released 28 April 2014 by Mego Records. The album has been described as a conceptual and sonic successor to Fennesz's well-received 2001 album Endless Summer and is his first solo release since 2008's Black Sea. Bécs is described as a departure from the drone music influences of Black Sea, instead featuring contemporary pop music structures
Christian Fennesz's 2001 album Endless Summer was a go-to album of electronic music for people who don’t necessarily listen to a lot of electronic music. For his new record, Fennesz has returned to both the label and the style that provided that breakthrough. Fennesz once illuminated the beauty of a digitally scrambled memory, but Bécs is a memory of a digitally scrambled memory.
That cool, abstract image you see above is the album’s artwork. Bécs is the Hungarian word for Vienna, in case you were wondering, and the album features contributions from a handful of collaborators.
Fennesz has always used his signature guitar sound as the foundation for songs, stretching its tones into unimaginable shapes of beauty and dissonance.
With Bécs, Fennesz achieves the near-impossible, crafting a musical sequel that retains the energy, vision and flow of its predecessor.

As the album continued forth, I was flooded with the same excitement and intrigue of that September evening. Clearly that evening was where Bécs was born for me, even if it had long been festering in Fennesz (and likely so). The same descriptions that held true of the live performance stand the test of time. Though the visual component is not included, that doesn’t mean anyone with imagination couldn’t feel the cruelty and chaos of nature’s embrace as it plays out in Fennesz’s latest flirtation with antique California tropes possessed by modern day cynicism.
