The North Star Grassman and the Ravens is a 1971 album by English folk rock singer-songwriter Sandy Denny. Built mostly around her own compositions, The North Star Grassman and the Ravens is distinguished by its elusive lyrics and unexpected harmonies

By any standards, The North Star Grassman and the Ravens is a fine album full of great songs and inspired vocal performances, but considering the excellence of Denny's music in Fairport Convention, it was a genuine disappointment, and seems pale in comparison to her next two solo efforts, Sandy and Like an Old-Fashioned Waltz.

Sandy Denny - The North Star Grassman And The RavensFrom the album : The North Star Grassman and the Ravens (1971). Denny had apparently suffered from substance abuse problems for some time, and by 1977 her addictions were obvious to others. During her pregnancy, she drank and took cocaine. Linda Thompson told The Guardian that shortly after her daughter Georgia's birth, Denny "was crashing the car and leaving the baby in the pub and all sorts of stuff.

To the tower and to the ravens And the tale that hopes they'll never leave What if they should go? We always dread to think of them I wonder if they flew one day And no-one ever knew they'd gone To circle over ships at sea Claiming yet another son. That is you to me That is where I think you are Never on the land But gone to find the North Star. The North Star Grassman and the Ravens" Track Info. The North Star Grassman and the Ravens Lyrics.

It was September 1971 and her first solo album, The North Star Grassman And The Ravens, had just been released; finally, this was Denny's chance to be the star she had always dreamt of being. As she entered the stage, she tripped, knocked a glass of water off her piano and struggled to get her guitar over the gown's flowing sleeves. She went off stage and came on moments later in jeans and a t-shirt to rapturous applause. Born Alexandra Elene MacLean Denny on Jan. 6, 1947, Sandy Denny added her inimitable, infectious alto to the great British folk-rock records of the late 1960s, working with The Strawbs, Led Zeppelin and Fairport Convention, who all wanted to bring electric-rock ingenuity to folk's cliquish orthodoxy. In fact, Richard Thompson, who would become her musical co-conspirator, dubbed Denny the "most important singer of generation.
