Orchestra – The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Piano – Moura Lympany. Australian WRC 4th pressing, sourced from original stampers and featuring unique sleeve art. Mono and stereo versions have an identical sleeve and the same number on the back (TE 233) - the mono version has "TE-233" on beige 'strobe' labels, while the stereo has "STE-233" on green 'strobe' labels. There is a printed "stereo" rosette on the back, and the mono has a red sticker with "mono" placed over this (though these tend to drop off with age).

GRIEG: Piano Concerto in A Minor Op. 16. FRANCK: Symphonic Variations. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Constantin Silvestri. Fine LP album - Masterpiece. Oz pressing on EMI/His Master's Voice records (SMP0013).

Moura was first taught the piano by her mother, who seems to have decided her daughter's career at an early stage. She also set her on course for a cosmopolitan way of life by sending her to school in Belgium for four years, until an uncle thought she was becoming more Belgian than English. When Moura was 12 she went to her first symphony concert, conducted by Basil Cameron; she pleaded to play with an orchestra, so her mother wrote to Cameron asking for an audition. Her interpretations were unpretentious: warm and graceful, without any straining after effect; her recordings for EMI of Brahms's last three sets of piano pieces and of Schumann's Piano Concerto with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under Constantin Silvestri are classics, a corrective to the many pianists who try to squeeze so much out of the music that they distort its character.

Lympany duly won this. That year she played Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor Op. 16 with the Academy Orchestra conducted by Henry J. Wood. Moura Lympany then travelled to Vienna for nine months where she studied piano with Paul Weingarten (1886-1948) and in the following year she entered the Liszt Competition in Budapest but was not placed (it was the year that Annie Fischer won first prize). In Boston she played a programme that included Book II of Johannes Brahms’ Variations on a theme of Paganini Op.

Moura Lympany plays concerti this way. Warhorses, like the Liszt A Major, that I listen to because I am curious as to how a certain pianist might play certain passages but rarely seek out for the pure pleasure of the music, come to life in her hands and I remember how delighted I was when I first got to know the music as a teenager. There is but one (Turina's Rapsodia Sinfonica) work on this page that has not been played beyond recognition by those whose performing licenses should perhaps be taken away. More common is the question, "Did I ever really love this music?" And there. Liszt Piano Concerto 2 in A major, S 125 Sir Malcolm Sargent conducting the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Part I. Part II. Litolff Scherzo from Concerto Symphonique 4 in D minor, Op 102.

Silvestri's success in this 1930 National Radio Orchestra of Romania concert persuaded him to follow conducting as a career. Having made his UK début with the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 1957 at the Royal Albert Hall, Silvestri defected to Great Britain in 1961 and assumed the post of Principal Conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. He raised the standard and prestige of the orchestra to one of international standing  . The Romantic Piano Concerto Vol. 14 - Litolff: Concerto Symphonique No 2 in B Minor, Concerto Symphonique No 4 in D minor Audio CD. Henry Charles Litolff. With Boult, Curzon's Franck is on a similarly lofty plane, and the Litolff is a worthy filler.
