Performer: Jean Sibelius, Herbert Blomstedt, San Francisco Symphony. Audio CD (August 11, 1992). It is from the latter symphony cycle that this recording is taken. Arguably the most popular of the seven symphonies that Sibelius composed, the Second Symphony is a vivid musical landscape of the composer's snow-covered homeland, as much a symbol of national pride as his anthemic tone poem "Finlandia", and one that culminates with one of the most triumphant endings in the entire symphonic literature, especially for the 20th century.

THE BACKSTORY Listening to Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2, which is now more than a century old and has long been a classic, we may not find the piece terribly shocking. But to ears not yet inured to its contours, it was daring indeed-a work that departed from the conventions of its genre not less than did symphonies by, say, Gustav Mahler, whose Fifth Symphony is its exact contemporary. Sibelius objected to this interpretation, preferring that no programmatic implications be attached to this work. Nonetheless, this symphony does seem to express something specific to the Finnish imagination.
The Symphony No. 43, by Jean Sibelius was started in winter 1901 in Rapallo, Italy, shortly after the successful premiere of the popular Finlandia, and finished in 1902 in Finland. Sibelius said, "My second symphony is a confession of the soul.
Decca has been releasing cycles of the symphonies of Sibelius about once a decade since the introduction of the long playing record. In the '50s, there was the stern-faced Anthony Collins with the lean London Symphony Orchestra. In the '60s, there was the baby-faced Lorin Maazel with the lush Vienna Philharmonic. In the '80s, there was the craggy-faced Vladimir Ashkenazy with the powerful Philharmonia Orchestra. In the '90s, there was the poker-faced Herbert Blomstedt with the colorful San Francisco Symphony. Each cycle has its advocates
