Mastodon - Remission (2002).

The band's 2002 debut album, Remission, garnered significant critical acclaim for its unique sound. Mastodon's second full-length release, Leviathan, is a concept album based on the novel Moby-Dick by Herman Melville. Three magazines awarded the record Album of the Year in 2004: Revolver, Kerrang! and Terrorizer. The song "Colony of Birchmen" from the band's third album (released in 2006), Blood Mountain, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2007. Formation, early years and Remission (2000–2003). Leviathan and Call of the Mastodon (2004–2005). Blood Mountain (2006–2008).

Remission is an excellent album, melding brash, abrupt, noisecore riffing with 70's metal guitar heroics and southern rock soul. Last year’s Lifesblood EP was a schizophrenic mishmash of different facets of extreme music, which seemed motivated by the need to have everyone shut up and take notice. Remission is more of a focused affair, mature and confident, and really focused around some strong songwriting. The vocals on this album are very different from later Mastodon, when they have some guy doing really whiny stuff. Here, though, we have some guy doing some awesome screaming/shouting stuff.

Remission (Mastodon album). Troy Sanders has said that the album is loosely based on the theme of fire. However, Remission was Mastodon's only album not considered a concept album until 2011's "The Hunter" I was never able to put that stuff anywhere. All that pain I was carrying inside.

Mastodon had a lot to do with that. That’s one of the main reasons that the album is titled Remission. Remission means forgiveness and healing. Mastodon helped me do that: Forgive a lot of things that happened in my life.

Many people know Mastodon now as a bunch of bearded loonies who have songs about white whales and old novels. And, fair enough, it is a true description, despite how very vague it is. But before the success of Leviathan propelled them into the public spotlight, Mastodon released this, their first album proper, which would deviate from the lesser sounds of Lifesblood their demo, and showcase their talents as a band. Remission takes less than a second to show you that this is no ordinary band - seriously.

I can't speak about any of the other original presses. But this sounds exactly as it should in my opinion. Perhaps not better than the original CD version (haven't compared them yet) but at least 10x better than the remaster I have.
